Redwoods 2
I tried not to worry about it. But campgrounds fill on summer weekends. Standish-Hickey State Recreation Area, the southern-most of the Redwood State Parks that make up this World Heritage Site and part of the California Coast Range Biosphere Reserve was not full!
They call it the Lost Coast. Arriving at 7 pm on a Friday well into the summer season to one of the Redwoods State Park, is pushing it if you expect to find a space. However— There was more than one. The lost coast nickname will prove apt up through the rest of this lovely, uncrowded region as well.
One of the best swimming holes complete with beach! They put summer bridges that are removed before the winter rains can swell the rivers and creeks and wash out the bridges.

look— I found an art piece on the beach!
Grizzley Creek SP
More excellent swimming, and summer bridges,( removed for winter raging rivers).
A fun campfire program with great questions from the kids before the excellent slide show on alternative energy. This, from a ranger who, these past 30 years, has lived in these woods, heating by wood, using a seasonal creek in summer to generate electricity and two small solar panels in winter.
